How fast is US mail delivered?

I was in San Francisco during the second full week of December for the American Geophysical Union conference, and on the Thursday of that week, I dropped off two pieces of mail. I dropped them off directly at the post office in downtown San Francisco (so not in a blue street-side mailbox). One letter was destined for a remote part of Maryland, the other for Houston.

They both arrived at their destinations 1 week + 1 day later – the Friday of the week after. They also both arrived on the exact same day, which I thought was kind of weird, given there was a big difference in distance traveled and remoteness.

Additionally, on Thurs, Dec 21, I sent a letter from one small town in North Carolina headed to another small town two hours away. It was picked up during the door-to-door postal deliveries. It arrived at its destination a zippy two days later, on Saturday, Dec 23, just in time for xmas!
